Keep The Course: How To Learn About Your 401(k) Plan

Each Wednesday 401kBasics posts a new article in a weekly series called “Keep the Course”. This series is designed to give the average consumer information on how to keep their 401k plan on track! Your feedback or suggestions on future articles is welcome.

In several of our prior posts we talk about the various provisions that a 401(k) may offer, but where would you go if you wanted to find out the specifics about your own plan?

  • Summary Plan Description (SPD): This document is provided to you upon eligibility to enter the plan and is written in plain english.
  • Human Resources Department: Most companies have a benefit specialist who can direct you to the appropriate resource.
  • Service Provider Website and Phone Line: Most companies that manage 401(k) plans provide personalized websites, automated phone lines and representatives that can answer your questions.

As you read our previous articles about Roth Rollovers, Loans, and Hardship Withdrawals review the items listed above to educate yourself on how to find out about your own plan.
